Wednesday, December 17, 1997 Published at 10:15 GMT Talking Point Should governments talk to people with paramilitary links?
The last time a member of Sinn Fein walked into 10 Downing Street it was 1921 and that man was Michael Collins. He negotiated a peace with the British government that formed the basis of Northern Ireland as it stands today.
Sinn Fein is the political wing of the largest nationalist paramilitary organisation, the IRA and until recently, Mr Adams and its other leaders were banned from talking on UK television. Mr Blair has said he is prepared to take the political risks of entertaining Sinn Fein for the chance of peace.
Mr Adams has been met by international leaders before. In 1995 he was welcomed to the White House by President Clinton. The two also met and shook hands when President Clinton visited Belfast.
At least this government is trying to speak to the parties....
The message the Prime Minister is giving is that the government will buckle under pressure.....
The question is, under what conditions will these talks be
successful?
