Talking Point Should drivers be banned from using mobile phones?
We all might like to think it is possible to drive and chat on the phone at the same time, but is it dangerous?
The UK road users' bible, the Highway Code, is clamping down on mobile conversations.
The code's new Section 127 warns: "Never use a hand held mobile phone or microphone while driving."
Even using hands-free systems is deemed "likely to distract your attention from the road".
The Highway Code may not be a legal document, but its recommendations are used as benchmarks by the courts. Judges and magistrates will not look favourably on motorists who have had accidents while using a mobile phone.
Is it time drivers kept their minds on the road?
Many businessmen would argue that using the phone in the car is essential, especially for those whose job involves driving around the country from place to place. For many their car is their office.
But Transport Minister Lord Whitty warned: "Everyone who uses the road has a basic responsibility to abide by its rules."
Earlier this year a woman hit another car while overtaking at 70 mph as she spoke to her boyfriend on her mobile phone. She was jailed for 12 months after admitting causing death by dangerous driving.
