Talking Point

Should Clinton resign?

So, Bill Clinton has become only the second US president in history to be impeached.

Now he will face a full trial in the Senate. The Senate could eventually vote for his removal.

[Click here for an explanation of the impeachment process.]

So, should the President resign now rather than go through that trial, which could last weeks or months?

Should he spare the country the indignity of having its chief executive go, once again, through the details of his private life in public?

Or should President Clinton stay on and now face the music?

Should he try for a deal which might see him censured by Congress but remaining in office?

Republicans insisted Mr Clinton's actions amounted to the "high crimes and misdemeanours", the definition of impeachment.

But Vice President Al Gore restated his faith in the president and said the proceedings amounted to the "saddest day" he had known in Washington.

"The vote does a great disservice to a man who will be regarded in the history books as one of our greatest presidents," he said.

What do you think?

Should Clinton resign?
