Talking Point

Are England simply not good enough?

England's football team may have notched up a 3-0 victory against Luxembourg, but their performance was undoubtedly lacklustre.

Commentators say England's highly-paid professionals should have wiped the floor with a part-time team that included a civil servant, bank workers and a primary school teacher.

And England fans must have feared the worst when, after only six minutes, the civil servant was awarded a penalty.

Luckily for the visitors, Luxembourg's Dany Theis launched the ball over the crossbar.

Finally, in what was generally described as a "workmanlike performance", Owen, Shearer and Southgate all scored to secure three very valuable points for England.

This follows two poor performances against Sweden and Bulgaria, culminating in the home team being booed out of Wembley.

They were jeered again in Luxembourg where captain Alan Shearer lost his cool with a reporter during a post-match interview.

Wales, on the other hand, showed the way it should be done, gallantly coming from behind to grab a 3-2 victory against talented Belarus.

So what has happened to England's star-studded football team? Do they even deserve to qualify?

Perhaps the players are just over-paid, over-indulged stars whose glamorous private lives distract them from the game.

People are wondering how a team who gave the performances of their lives in the World Cup can be struggling to even qualify for the European Championships.

Could it be Glenn Hoddle is unable to inspire his team? Is it time for him to let someone else have a go?

Clearly there is something wrong.

What do you think?

Are England good enough?
