Salaries at the top

The salaries paid to the bosses of the water companies have in the past been criticised for being excessive. The average financial package for water company chairmen in England and Wales for 1996-97 was £159,000, more than three times higher than the average for 1990 of £55,600. But in this time, many of the companies have grown too, rapidly expanding into other areas of business. The average pay for Chief Executives of three Scottish water companies in 1996-97 was £110,000. In Northern Ireland, water services are run by a Grade 6 civil servant, earning between £33,400 & £54,200.

Not surprisingly the three highest paid chief executives in the water industry head the three big multi-utility companies. The chief executive of Scottish Power, which owns Southern Water, was paid £397,256 last year. The boss of Hyder which owns Welsh Water was paid £325,000 and the head of United Utilities, which owns North West Water was paid £305,900.
