"A traditional Conservative stronghold, Cardiff North which contains some of the capital’s most prosperous residential areas, was snatched by Labour’s Julie Morgan in the 1997 General Election, with majority of 8,126. The Conservatives came second on 16,334, the Liberal Democrats third on 5,294 and Plaid Cymru fourth on 1,201. The seat forms part of the Cardiff unitary authority, whose electors voted No in the 1997 devolution referendum by a sizeable majority of 12,062. Cardiff unitary authority itself is firmly in Labour hands, with Labour holding 55 of the 67 seats, the Liberal Democrats holding 9, the Conservatives 2 and Plaid Cymru 1."
