"This new seat, created by splitting the Westminster constituency of Orkney and Shetland, has the smallest electorate of any constituency in Scotland at about 15,500 voters - less than a third of the Scottish average. Orkney comprises 70 islands of which only 20 are inhabited. They are separated from the mainland by the Pentland Firth. Stromness, and the capital Kirkwall, are the two main towns, both of which are situated on the largest island, known as 'The Mainland'. Apart from the oil terminal at Flotta, the main industries were fishing and beef production but the BSE crisis has been a major blow to the local economy. Tourism is a growth industry and now probably employs more than beef production but due to the inclement weather and Orkney's remoteness it is very seasonal.
