"East Lothian lies to the east of Edinburgh, comprising mostly agricultural land and seaside resorts, one of which (Gullane) is home to the Muirfield Open Championship golf course. Such topography could easily fit a Conservative seat, but it is the smaller and more heavily populated areas in the west that see Labour elected more often than not. Cockenzie, with its coal-fired power station, and the ex-mining towns of Prestonpans and Ormiston, (along with Dunbar to the east), are all Labour strongholds that can easily outvote the small farming villages and coastal resorts. East Lothian has been among the constituencies to suffer from the downturn in the electronics industry. The closure of the Mitsubishi plant at Haddington with the loss of 500 jobs was announced in April last year.
