Paisley North is an industrial seat, it also includes the towns of Renfrew and Linwood, as well as Glasgow Airport. It is bordered to the north east by the river Clyde. There is a high proportion of council housing, with unemployment being as much of a problem here as it is in any other depressed Clydeside constituency.
The Hillington industrial estate takes up a large area in the west of the seat, and provides many inhabitants with places of work, but non-manual, white-collar, jobs are thin on the ground.
Labour holds this seat in the Scottish Parliament, with the SNP coming second to Labour in the eledtions in 1997 and 1999.
