The seat comprises the scenic holiday area of the predominantly English-speaking Gower peninsula combined with the inland industrial area of the Lliw Valley. The latter includes the working class communities of Gorseinon, Pontardulais and Pontardawe, which have a high number of Welsh speakers.
The Gower Peninsula was the first area of Britain to be designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (in 1956) and tourism is a major employer. This seat also contains the "Mumbles", named after the huge rocks which protrude out into Swansea Bay.
This is a popular seaside resort and has a large prosperous residential area in it; the Welsh actress Catherine Zeta Jones is one of the most famous daughters of the area.
