Against 1997 General Election 2.2% from Labour to Conservative

Description
This constituency is centred around the small town of Buckingham and contains a large number of affluent villages.

It is by far the largest seat in the county covering all the land in the north and ending just beneath Milton Keynes.

Buckingham town retains much of its traditional Tudor charm and is the site of Britain’s first independent university which opened in 1976.

Large housing estates were built around the city before and after the war which resulted in serious traffic congestion and pollution by the 1970s.

Popular protest brought about the building of the southern ring road, completed in 1979, which took the pressure off the city centre and encouraged developments leading onto the ring road.

This development continues with the new estates such as Castle Meadow and Mount Pleasant.

John Bercow, MP for Buckingham since 1997, spent much of his maiden speech praising Margaret Thatcher, "the world’s greatest living statesman".

Tony Blair called him "nasty and ineffectual in equal quantity" after he criticised Robin Cook for his personal problems.

His progression up the party ranks has currently led him under the wing of Ann Widdecombe as a home affairs spokesman.
