Description
Bradford Nrth is a misleading name for this kidney-shaped seat, which actually nestles on the eastern side of the city, and consists primarily of private housing.
It comprises everything from near-slum terraces to substantial Victorian houses. Despite a large Asian population in the inner part of the seat, the battIe for Bradford North has been almost exclusively between the mainstream parties, namely Labour and the Conservatives. At the last election, the Islamic Party of Great Britain secured just 800 votes. Despite this two horse race, the seat's recent history makes interesting reading. In the early 1980s, the sitting Labour MP Ben Ford was deselected, and replaced with the Militant-linked candidate Pat Wall. Mr Ford then stood against Mr Wall as an Independent in the 1983 general election and the two split the Labour vote and the Conservative candidate Geoffrey Lawler sneaked in to the great surprise of many. Pat Wall stood again and defeated Lawler in the 1987 general election, but then died after a long illness in 1990, aged 57. Since the ensuing by-election, Labour support has grown in Bradford North, with Terry Rooney winning comfortably in 1992 and 1997. Past Results
