The Roses have fought more than one close battle here. Labour’s insurrection in 1997 was, however, a little less successful than the Tudors in 1485.
Conservative David Tredinnick held on in 1997 but his majority was slashed from 14,131 to 1,027.
Bosworth was held by Labour from 1951 to 1970, but lost in 1970 to Adam Butler . For much of the Labour period it was held by journalist Woodrow Wyatt.
The decline of the old Leicestershire coalfield and an increase n private housing saw Labour’s hold on the area loosen.
The constituency is predominantly rural. The traditional manufacturing industries in the area are textiles, clothing and footwear. However, these industry have been suffering since the late 1980s.
Farming is the other major occupation - this is focused on pigs, beef and dairy farming. As in most of Leicestershire, farming has been in decline over the past few years.
