Gwenda Thomas sits on the Health and Social Services Committee of the Assembly. She is also link person for the west Wales regional committee.

She won Neath for Labour, though by no great margin from the Plaid candidate. The seat is held by Peter Hain at Westminster by a massive majority. Over a quarter of the electors speak Welsh, in this seat which is partly a dormitory area for Swansea, but has some industry and a large opencast mine.

She received campaign contributions from three unions: UCW, TGWU and USDAW.

She was a civil servant, a clerical and executive officer for the county court and Benefits Agency.

As councillor for Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen on Neath Port Talbot CBC, she chaired the councilís Social Services Committee. She has campaigned for carersí rights, having cared for her own mother for several years. She launched a campaign to find more foster carers. In 1997 she had to bring in nearly £2m worth of cuts to services. She has been local organiser for the Blood Transfusion Service.

She is a Welsh speaker , and has served on the Welsh language Education Development Committee, representing the Parent Teachersí Association of Wales. She has supported a number of charities such as Barnardos and the NSPCC.

She has previous political experience as Labour's branch treasurer in Neath.
