Janice Gregory

Ogmore Constituency
Personal Details
Date of Birth -
January 10, 1955.

Previous Occupation(s)
Parliamentary Constituency Secretary to Sir Ray Powell, MP for 8 years.

Political Career
AM for the Constituency of Ogmore since May 6, 1999.
Whip 1999-.

Labour's AM for Ogmore worked as assistant to the Ogmore MP, her father Sir Raymond Powell. He was well known as being sceptical about Welsh devolution.

She sits on the Local Government and Environment Committee of the Assembly. She is one of four Labour whips. She also keeps an eye on Mid Wales for the regional committee.

She had an easy win over the Plaid Candidate at Ogmore, which has always been a traditional Labour seat, where newer industries have come in to soak up the unemployment following the decline of coalmining.

Born in 1955, she has been active in women's issues. She is also a member of the Co-operative Party, The Fabian Society, and the USDAW shop workers’ union.

Her political interests include housing and animal welfare. She, her husband Mike, and his brother Derek, all served on the local Labour party executive.

In February 2000, following Alun Michael's resignation as First Secretary, Ms Gregory, along with two other AMs, resigned her position as a whip, claiming there had been a plot to oust Mr Michael.
