The trade union official was named as the Assembly's influential Secretary for Finance after she was elected as the member for Gower. As the woman with the hand on the Assembly’s purse strings, she has said she doesn’t expect to be popular. She also serves on the Assembly’s Equality of Opportunity Committee.

She had a fairly comfortable victory in Gower, a peninsula which is mainly a holiday area, combined with the inland industrial area of the Lliw Valley.

A member of the Wales TUC, she brings to the post experience from the banking sector and is an ex-president of the banking union BIFU. She has served on the Wales TUC General Council, and chaired it..

The Gower AM will also provide knowledge from other areas, as a member of the Broadcasting Council for Wales, the Wales Millennium Centre and South West Wales Economic Forum. She has also been a director of Chwarae Teg, which aims to expand the role of women in the workforce, and a member of the Council of the University of Wales, Swansea.

She is a member of the TGWU and the ISTC. She was awarded the MBE in Jan .1998 for services to the trade union movement.
