A university lecturer, who is one of Labour's most experienced Assembly politicians, Sue essexand brings years of experience as a Cardiff councillor to her role as Labour AM for Cardiff North.
She beat the Conservative Jonathan Morgan by a small margin in Cardiff North, a seat which has alternated between the parties at Westminster – it contains prosperous residential suburbs, and forms part of an area which voted NO by a sizeable majority in the referendum. It is represented at Westminster by Julie Morgan, wife of Rhodri Morgan, whom she supported for leader.
With a career in planning, she lectured at the University of Wales College, Cardiff (now on leave of absence), and is the former leader of Cardiff city council. When she decided to stand down as a councillor the South Wales Echo said she would be “remembered as an effective leader of the old city council, believing in consensus politics and helping promote community schemes.”
A former member of the Countryside Council for Wales, Ms Essex is also set to play a key role in Labour's planning, transport and environment policies. She has signed a round robin expressing extreme caution about GM crops.
In Rhodri Morgan's first Assembly Cabinet, Ms Essex was given a new portfolio, Environment, Transport and Planning and has stood down from her former role as chair of the Assembly committee on Local Government and the Environment.
