Spokesman for Rural Development 1999-.
(Lib Dem Montgomeryshire)
Member of the Agriculture and Rural Development Committee of the Assembly, also of the European Affairs Committee. He is the Lib Dem spokesman on Agriculture.
He had a comfortable win in this traditional Liberal stronghold, represented at Westminster by Lembit Opik, who beat him in the selection contest for MP. Newtown and Welshpool are the main towns in this sheep-farming seat, where Welsh is frequently spoken, particularly in the Western parts.
He is a former science teacher who has turned to farming in Montgomeryshire (he is a partner in the business with his wife): he started a farmers' programme on radio, and has begun a scheme for students to visit farms. He declares his directorship of Chair Primestock Producers Ltd. He has been active in seeking the end of the ban on beef-on-the-bone.
As a county councillor he has proved to be a campaigner, and has led successful community regeneration schemes. He has been active on community issues in Powys such as rural stress, and Eisteddfod fundraising. Wants the return of free school milk for the under-7s.
He opposed the idea of his committee taking a decision (on beef-on-the-bone) in private. Supports foxhunting: said the move to ban it was "Old Labour Class war".
His interests include sport, painting, walking and music. He has a website: http://www.ellajen.com/libdems/
