Chemist Geraint Davies scored one of the most remarkable successes of the 6 May assembly election when he took the Rhondda seat by a majority of 2,285 votes from Labour candidate Wayne David.
Mr David, as MEP for South Wales Central, had been thought to be a safe bet in a Labour stronghold which normally returns Westminster majorities well in excess of 20,000.
However, Mr Davies, who is a community pharmacist in Treherbert, was aided by the massive groundswell in Plaid support across the former mining valleys of south Wales and by the series of scandals which had afflicted Labour in the Rhondda Cynon Taff area.
The victory, combined with Plaid's gains at Islwyn and Llanelli, gives the party valuable credibility outside its traditional Welsh-speaking heartlands. Mr Davies has taken up the issue of miners' compensation.
Educated at Chelsea College, University of London, Mr Davies has been a county and district councillor. A member of the Rhondda Cynon Taff Council, - since May in Plaid control - he led the PC group for thirteen years. His special interests include health and housing, and he has campaigned on the issues of water rates and leasehold.
He stood twice for Westminster against Allan Rogers MP, without much denting his large majority.
He is also a school governor. President of Blaenrhondda FC. Deacon at Blaencwm Baptist Church.
In the Register he declares two community pharmacies and one drug store, plus shares in Alliance Unichem and Norwich Union.
