A member of the Assembly Committee on Pre-16 Education, Schools and Early Learning.

The leader of the Plaid Cymru Group on the south Wales valley local authority Rhondda Cynon Taff, she is an experienced former Cynon Valley borough councillor.

She led her party to election success in May, by dramatically bringing Plaid to power in Rhondda Cynon Taff, which had been Labour-run for more than 70 years, and by getting elected herself as a list member for the Assembly. She has been extremely busy since. She declared she would not take her £13,000 a year allowance as council leader.

The local government victory was the culmination of years of Plaid Cymru pressure, but was aided by recent scandals involving the local Labour administration. She said the council was “effectively bankrupt” and pledged cuts, job losses and tighter discipline.

Mrs Jarman is likely to be an influential force in Plaid on issues such as economic regeneration in the Valleys and modernising local government.

Lives in Cwmpennar, Mountain Ash, with husband Colin. Enjoys playing with grandchildren. In Sept. 1997 a former mayoress was fined and made to pay costs for punching her unconscious at a civic dinner.
