Shadow Assembly Secretary for Education (up to 16) 1999-.
Gareth Jones is Plaid Cymru's Secretary for Pre-16 Education. He also serves on the Assembly Committee on Pre-16 Education, Schools and Early Learning and also on the Standards of Conduct Committee.
He won a remarkable and narrow victory (majority after a recount: 114) over Labour at Conwy, which caused surprise, as it is a seat which was held at Westminster by the Tories until 1997, when Labourís Betty Williams took it. The seat combines the holiday resort and retirement area of Llandudno with more rural, Welsh-speaking inland areas, where slate-quarrying was once important.
The return of this retired headmaster gave Plaid a clean sweep of the seats in north west Wales. He has opposed the nomination of peers from his party.
Mr Jones was educated at University of Wales, Swansea. He is an independent educational consultant, a Conwy County Borough Councillor and LEA governor.
In 1991 he was awarded an OBE for services to education. His political interests include the environment, economy and education. He enjoys golf and mountain walking.
