Elin Jones was promoted to Plaid Cymru's Assembly Cabinet in party president Ieuan Wyn Jones's August 2000 reshuffle. She was made Chief Whip and Shadow Secretary for Agriculture and the Rural Economy, replacing Rhodri Glyn Thomas in that role.

She also sits on the Assembly’s Post-16 Education and Training Committee and speaks for her party on the subject. She also sits on the European Affairs Committee.

She won a decisive victory over the other candidates in Ceredigion, which used to be a Liberal seat at Westminster till taken by Cynog Dafis in 1992. It is predominantly rural, with tourism along its coastline, and has a majority of Welsh speakers. It includes Aberystwyth, with its university and National Library.

She is a fluent Welsh speaker and was elected Mayor of Aberystwyth in 1997. She has been a town councillor since 1991, and chaired the Finance committee for two years. She has also served on the Plaid National Executive.

Until election she worked for the Development Board for Rural Wales, and the Welsh Development Agency with special responsibility for European matters. There are fuller details of her work and career in the PC Ceredigion website. Member of UNISON.

Ceredigion's Assembly Member was educated at the University of Wales, Cardiff and Aberystwyth.

She was brought up on a farm near Lampeter. She is a director of Radio Ceredigion. She is a school governor, a member of the Council of the Court of Governors of the University of Wales, and sings in a choir. She has a website:
