Carwyn Jones is a member of the Assembly committees on Agriculture and Rural Development, Legislation, and Equality of opportunity.
He had a comfortable victory over the Tory candidate at Bridgend, which is mainly an industrial area, with the large Ford factory; it also includes the holiday and retirement area of Porthcawl. The unions Aslef (£500) and the TGWU(£100) contributed to his election expenses.
The 32-year-old barrister and professional tutor in the Law school at University of Wales, Cardiff, specialises in Criminal, Family and personal Injury Law. He was an active campaigner for a Yes vote in the referendum campaign, and is a councillor for Bridgend County Borough. After the count he fell out with Sir Ray Powell over the scrutiny procedures.
Mr Jones, a fluent Welsh speaker, is the chair of Bridgend County Borough Labour Group. He is a member of UNISON, the Society of Labour Lawyers, Amnesty International and the Fabian Society.
His political interests include transport, Europe, and legal affairs. He is a school governor. His wife works for the BBC.
In Rhodri Morgan's first Assembly administration, he became a Deputy Secretary with junior responsibilities for local government, environment and land.
