John Griffiths is a member of the Standards of Conduct Committee of the Assembly, and also of the Post 16 Education and Training Committee.

He won this safe seat by a fair margin on a low turnout it is represented at Westminster by the former Tory MP Alan Howarth, who was selected when Roy Hughes went to the Lords and it includes the giant Llanwern steelworks.

He read law as a mature student, before becoming a solicitor and lecturer .

He has served as a Gwent county councillor and Newport borough councillor.

He sits on Labour's National Policy Forum. He is a member of the Worker's Education Association, the Full Employment Forum, MSF, the Co-op Party, and the ISTC union. The latter two contributed to his election expenses. In the Register he declares gifts, including 60 bottles of Assembly ale.

He is a keen runner and has raised 3500 for various charities by running four times in the London Marathon.
