ALAN PUGH (Lab Clwyd West) He is a member of three Assembly committees: European Affairs, Audit, and Post 16 Education and Training. He is also the linkman for the North Wales region.

Alan Pugh was the man who narrowly denied Welsh Tory leader Rod Richards a constituency seat in the Assembly, when he took the Clwyd West seat for Labour. MSF contributed 1000 and UNISON #5000 towards his campaign expenses. Mr Richards, who had previously held it at Westminster, had hoped to take the seat, which covers the coastal retirement and holiday areas around Colwyn Bay, as well as inland areas.

In his victory speech, Mr Pugh denounced Mr Richards's attempt to raise fears about the Welsh language during the Assembly election campaign.

He has a background in education, as the assistant principal at West Cheshire College. His declared salary until May 1999 was 38,000 a year. He was also previously head of academic development at Llandrillo College. He is a specialist in computers, learning development and business studies. He has experience as a councillor, and his political interests include education and information technology. He is the son of a Rhondda coalminer. His leisure interests include opera and serious mountaineering. In Rhodri Morgan's Assembly administration, Mr Pugh has become a Deputy Secretary with junior responsibility for health and social services.
