Contested Blaenau Gwent 1992 General Election and Cardiff Central 1997 General Election.
Contested Vale of Glamorgan, AM for the Region of South Wales Central since May 6, 1999.

As the Tory spokesman on health, David Melding sits on the Assembly’s Health and Social Services committee, and also on the Equality of Opportunity committee. He has warned about the debt crisis of the NHS in Wales.

He stood in the marginal Vale of Glamorgan and ran a close second to Labour’s Jane Hutt. But as no.2 on the Tory regional list for South Wales Central, he gained a “top-up” seat.

Mr Melding is manager of the Carers’ National Association, Wales, and is a former deputy director of the Welsh Centre for International Affairs. He is chairman of the governors of a special school.

He previously stood as a Tory candidate at general elections for Cardiff Central (1997) and Blaenau Gwent (1992), and has special interests in social policy, health and education. He helped draft the Welsh Tories’ manifesto in 1999. He supported Nick Bourne for the leadership.

Educated in Cardiff and Virginia, US. He enjoys golf, swimming and photography.
