The former councillor was run close by Plaid Cymru when she was elected as AM for Pontypridd

However, since her election, she has been chosen by First Secretary Alun Michael as deputy presiding officer (to Dafydd Elis-Thomas) in the Assembly.

Pontypridd is normally a safe Labour seat, held at Westminster by Kim Howells MP by a massive majority. But on polling day Labour got a rude shock at local level, when Plaid Cymru seized control of the Rhondda Cynon Taff council, which covers the area. The town is surrounded by former mining centres, and serves increasingly as a dormitory area for Cardiff.

The head of social affairs at the Welsh Local Government Association is a former co-ordinator of anti-poverty action, and is regarded as very much a New Labour figure. She was a late addition to the selection list, but was tipped for preferment.

An ex-Cardiff City councillor, Ms Davidson has experience of issues ranging from housing, equal opportunities to social policy. She ran the office of Rhodri Morgan MP for five years. She chairs the governors of a school.

She is a keen supporter of the arts, and was a member of the Welsh Arts Council for 12 years, and of its Lottery Board.
