Rosemary Butler already has a high profile, with a wide range of experience of public bodies in Wales. She admitted to being surprised at being made Education Secretary – she had been tipped to take the culture, media and sport brief.

She has been a governor of local schools and the University of Wales College Newport. Problems on her plate include teachers’ pay, the backlog of school repairs, the teaching of Welsh, and school governors’ rights.

She had an easy victory over the Tory in Newport West, which is held by Paul Flynn at Westminster and is strong Labour territory. Labour dominate the Newport Council. The seat contains the large Korean LG electronics plant. She has been a Newport councillor since 1973, is a former mayor, and has chaired the council’s leisure services committee for 14 years.

She has served on the Museums and Galleries Commission, and has been a Director of Tourism South and West Wales, executive member of the Council for Museums in Wales, and a Trustee of the Cardiff bay Arts Trust. She has also been a member of the Sports Council for Wales, and the Broadcasting Council for Wales.

She is a trained chiropodist and ran her own foot clinic.
