JOHN SIMPSON Bucharest: 24 December 1989 1989 was an extraordinary year of revolution; the fall of the Berlin Wall was the spark that ended communist regimes in Czechoslovakia and Romania. John Simpson witnessed all three events for the BBC, but ended the year charting the overthrow and eventual bloody execution of Nicolai Ceausescu, who had held the Romanian people in his brutal grip for 40 years. |
