 The Chatham Islands welcomed the millennium with Moriori ceremonies. Beacons were lit and flares released. At sea the Royal Caribbean cruise liner was positioned on the International Dateline with music, dancing, streamers, balloons and champagne. On the stroke of midnight, ships sounded their horns and fireworks were launched. A wedding ceremony for two islanders also took place. |
