![]() Constituencies of London ![]() ![]() ![]() Since the old Greater London council was abolished in 1986 London’s population of seven million people have been without direct city-wide government. But Londoners voted to change that in a referendum and in May 2000 the capital will vote for its first directly-elected mayor. The electoral battleground facing the mayoral candidates and those running for a seat in the Greater London Assembly are incredibly diverse. London is one of the most multi-cultural cities in the world, home to people of more than 30 nationalities who between them speak 190 languages. And while average earnings in the capital can be up to a third higher than in the rest of England, London also contains some of the most deprived areas of the UK. ![]() ^^ Back to top |
