Chris Smith has held the position of culture secretary since Labour came to power in 1997.

He has responsibility for the government's policy on the arts, tourism and sport.

His department is also responsible for the national lottery and is chairman of the Millennium Commission. However, responsibility for the controversial Millennium Dome is held by Cabinet Office minister Lord Falconer.
