Employment minister Andrew Smith replaces Alan Milburn as the chief secretary to the Treasury.

He is the Treasury's second member of the Cabinet, after the Chancellor Gordon Brown.

His responsibilities at the Treasury include the presentation of economic policy and economic briefing, welfare reform and the strategic oversight of banking, financial services and insurance.
