Lord Irvine of Lairg is a key ally of the prime minister who is also credited with having introduced Tony Blair to his wife.

He has used his time in power to bring in sweeping reforms to the way the courts and the judiciary are run in Britain.

But he has faced criticism over the large sums of money he spent doing up his official residence and also faces calls to abolish his own job as part of his legal reforms.
