The Blairite MP for Tyneside North took over as Trade Secretary following the resignation of Peter Mandelson after the revelation about his secret £373,000 loan.
A relatively uncontroversial figure, the low point in his ministerial career came during his time as chief secretary to the Treasury when a Radio 5 Live interviewer exposed him as unable to do basic sums.
He is remembered for telling journalists in 1996 that Labour intended to sever its links with the unions.
