Leader of the House of Commons The leader of the House of Commons is responsible for the arrangement of government business in the Commons and the planning and supervising of the government's legislative programme. He or she also upholds the rights and privileges of the House. But it is not because of her performance as leader of the Commons that Margaret Beckett was tipped for reshuffle. Mrs Beckett was responsible for co-ordinating Labour's campaign in this summer's elections, including the disastrous elections for the European Parliament in which the number of Labour MEPs halved. |
