The party is headed by Kanshi Ram and promotes the rights of low-caste Hindus or Dalits. It has performed impressively in these elections winning 14 parliamentary seats. One of its political stars is the former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, Mayawati, who is also the party's parliamentary leader.
It has governed the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, with the support of other parties, for nearly three years.
Apart from Uttar Pradesh, the party has a considerable presence in Punjab as well as the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.
