THE HINDI HEARTLAND
The densely populated swathe of states in Hindi-speaking north and central India is crucial to the outcome of the election. The area is very much a stronghold of the BJP and its allies and in the last election Congress failed to make much headway. It.includes the biggest and most populous states in India, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, as well as the most lawless, Bihar. Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee is standing in Uttar Pradesh and the speculation is that Congress President Sonia Gandhi will also stand in the state.
