The ruling Hindu-nationalist BJP and its allies secured a 40-seat majority in the Indian general election, after five weeks of voting across a country divided by language, religion and regional loyalties. Despite appeals from political leaders to bolster national unity by choosing a national political party, much of India's electorate instead voted for a wide array of local and regional reasons.
