Since its foundation in 1948, Israel has been in conflict with its Arab neighbours over existential issues such as land, water and the future of millions of individuals who have lived for decades on a daily diet of insecurity, hostility and aggression. After three years of stagnation in negotiations under Binyamin Netanyahu, Israelis chose Ehud Barak as prime minister in 1999 on a promise of quick progress towards a comprehensive peace settlement.
