The House of Representatives: Republicans now control 223 seats, down from 228. The Democrats hold 211, up from 206. There is one Independent. All 435 seats were contested.
The Senate: No overall change. The Republicans control 55 seats; the Democrats have 45. There were 34 seats contested - 18 Democratic and 16 Republican.
Governors: Republicans lost one of their 32 seats. Democrats still have 17 seats. Independents have two seats - up from one. There were 36 governors seats contested - 24 Republicans, 11 Democrats and one Independent.
