Charles: Prince with passion

Charles and Diana, with William and Harry Charles found his bride in Lady Diana Spencer. After weeks of intense media speculation, the engagement was announced on February 24, 1981. At their first press appearance together, Charles raised eyebrows with his response to the question of whether they were in love: “Yes… whatever love is.”

Five months later they were married in fairytale style in St Paul's Cathedral. The marriage produced two sons: William Arthur Philip Louis on 21 June 1982, and Henry Charles Albert David was born on 15 September 1984.

But it was not long before the Royal marriage began to falter. Both admitted to having affairs – Charles having resumed his relationship with Camilla Parker-Bowles as early as 1986. By the end of the 1980s the relationship was in tatters. The couple separated in 1992 and formally divorced in August 1996. The Princess of Wales was killed in a car crash on 31 August 1997 in Paris, leaving Charles a single parent and his popularity waning.
