An heir is born
|
In a move to toughen him, Prince Charles was sent to complete his school years at Gordonstoun, Scotland. There he was mercilessly bullied and he begged his parents to allow him to leave the school which he described as “a death-hole”.
In 1966 he spent two school terms at the Geelong Church of England Grammar School, Melbourne, Australia. He later described the time as his happiest and most formative school days. Between 1967 and 1970, the Prince studied archaeology and anthropology and history at the University of Cambridge where he opted to live in college and attend regular classes instead of being privately tutored. He was also the first heir to take the final exams and graduated from with a BA (Honours) degree in 1970. He took an active part in undergraduate life, appearing in several college revues and gaining his University Colours for polo, but he made few friends due to his shyness. Charles’s investiture as Prince of Wales in 1969 was seen as the climax of his preparation for entry into public life. He was about to become a very popular royal. |
