The former President of the USSR, Mikhail Gorbachev, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate in 1990 for helping to bring the Cold War to an end.

Mr Gorbachev also made sweeping changes to the Soviet Union, carrying out radical economic reforms, bringing an end to censorship and dismantling the Soviet Union and Communism by giving independence to the country's 15 former republics.
