In 1977, Amnesty International was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its work as an international human rights organisation.

Founded in 1961, Amnesty works to free all prisoners of conscience detained anywhere for their beliefs or because of their ethnic origin, sex, colour or language - who have not used or advocated violence.

Amnesty was commended for its commitment to impartiality and to human rights through publicity, education and fundraising at a grassroots level.
