Hungary has the most obvious interest in what is going on in Yugoslavia, with which it shares a common border. There is a sizeable Hungarian minority in Serbia - and ethnic Hungarians have been drafted into the Yugoslav army. Hungarian politicians have already said it would be inappropriate for Hungarians to fight Hungarians. At the same time, Hungary is already an important logistical base for American peacekeeping troops in Bosnia. Hungary's foreign minister, Janos Martonyi, expressed the hope that Yugoslavia would not try to "spread tension" to Hungary or the northern Serb region of Vojvodina, where the Hungarian minority lives.
