China has strongly denounced the Nato action. The official China Daily attacked Nato for acting without the authority of the UN Security Council. "The sovereignty of an independent country and the authority of international law are being raped in the name of peace and humanism," the paper said.
China traditionally opposes interference in any country's internal affairs. It is also sensitive to any suggestion that it is being bypassed in its role as a permanent member of the UN Security Council. It has called for an immediate halt to the Nato air strikes. President Jiang Zemin has declared that, without a return to the negotiating table, "the Kosovo problem can only become more complicated and the Balkans more troubled".
