The Queen Mother at Sandown races
The Queen Mother developed a passion for horse racing

A new role

After the death of her husband, the grieving Queen Mother started to oversee the restoration of the remote Castle of Mey on the Caithness coast in Scotland. She also developed an interest in horse racing and subsequently owned a string of steeplechase winners. In time she resumed her public duties and became as busy as Queen Mother as she had been as Queen.
