LEBANON

Territory in southern Lebanon, occupied since 1978, remains in dispute. A UN Resolution calls for Israeli forces to withdraw from the area but Israel maintains that it needs a “security zone” to prevent incursions by Iranian-backed guerrillas. Israel's cabinet has agreed to withdraw on condition that Lebanon guarantee the security of Israel's northern border. Lebanon has rejected the deal and is unlikely to agree to a peace deal with out the involvement of its powerful neighbour, Syria.
