THE GOLAN HEIGHTS
The Golan Heights have a key strategic position and good water resources. Israel captured the territory from Syria in 1967 and annexed it in 1981. Syria continues to demand the return of the strategic plateau back in exchange for a peace agreement. Israeli leaders have so far said they will not surrender the territory. |
